European School of Economics students said felt ‘very privileged’ to attend the first day of the five-day Horse Racing Festival at Ascot, one of the most important weeks in the British sporting calendar featuring eight Group One contests, and boasting more prize money than any other race meet in Britain.

The Ascot Racecourse was founded by Queen Anne in 1711, and has since received the patronage of a further eleven monarchs.

Students set off from Waterloo station in London on their one-hour journey to Ascot…..dressed for the occasion with their glamorous hats and ready to see the show:
At 2pm sharp The Royal Landaus, led by four Windsor Greys, approach along the famous Straight Mile for the short but spectacular journey that since 1825 has signalled the start of the Royal MeetingThe Queen, wearing one of her favourite colours- blue – was in the the Royal Landaus carriage. It was led by four Windsor Grey horses and approached along the famous Straight Mile. It’s a short but spectacular journey that since 1825 has signalled the start of the Royal Meeting.

A typical rainy day in the Southwest of England, the students sported umbrellas along with their prescribed enclosure gear and took shelter in the marquees to enjoy the hospitality along with other  guests battling the weather. Rich extravagant hats, fine dresses and dapper gentlemen provided endless cause for discussion despite the grey day for Finance and Fashion students alike and while not picking horses, even the Entrepreneurship students!

Excitement climaxed with one of the Queen’s horse’s racing to victory for the second year running.

Students returned delighted and already planning their return!
