Thursday 14th March – Meeting point in front of the Pharmacy at the Santa Maria Novella Station, Florence, at 8:20 pm. Departure to Taormina by overnight train, you will have a place reserved in the sleeping car (cabin 4 beds).
Friday 15th March – arrival in Giardini Naxos, you do not need to wakeup and leave as the train enters onto the ferry to continue its journey. With our private bus we will reach Taormina (known as the Pearl of the Jonic sea, since the time of the Greeks). We start our trip with a guided walking tour of Taormina and during the walking tour we will stop in order to taste the famous Sicilian Cannolo. After the visit of Taormina we will reach the beaches of Giardini Naxos. Free time to go to swim and get a lunch. Late in the afternoon we will be transferred by bus to Siracusa and check into our 4-star hotel, you will be accommodated in twin bedded rooms, dinner at the Hotel (wine and water included) and Overnight.
Saturday 16th March After the buffet breakfast departure from the Hotel to start the guided walking tour. First we will visit the Neapolis (new town) and its famous Greek Theatre (the biggest in the world), the Latomie and the Orecchio di Dionisio. After the visit there will be the possibility to have a fresh orange juice, before reaching the Catacombs of San Giovanni (the second largest in Italy). Visit of the Catacombs and its fascinating Paleochristians Grafiti. After that we will the take a walk to the island of Ortiggia in order to visit the famous fish market.
Free time follows for a quick lunch or a taste of Arancini. In the afternoon we will visit the greek island of Ortiggia, its Fonte Aretusa, the Duomo, the Tempio di Apollo, Athena e Minerva, etc. Around 16:30 for those interested optional boat tour to the Grotte and Faraglioni, with the chance to swim in the Ocean. Back in our hotel for, our dinner (wine and water included) and Overnight.
Sunday 17th March After the buffet breakfast check out and transfer by private bus to Noto, guided visit of the Capital of the Baroque in Italy, called by Goethe “die Stein Garten” (the garden of Stones). After the visit we will reach the famous beaches of Avola Marina (Cost dei Saraceni), free time to swim and to have a lunch . In the afternoon transfer by bus to Aci Castello, we will then visit the capital of the Costa dei Ciclopi. After we will reach Catania for a short visit of the town. Departure to Florence by overnight train, you will have a place reserved in the sleeping car.
Monday the 18th March arrival in Florence, expected arrival time at 9:20 am.
Costs and what is included
The price of the trip is 288,00 Euro per person.
The price includes all transportation Florence – Sicily – Florence by overnight train (cabin 4 beds), the transfer around Sicily by luxury coach as per programme. Half Board at the hotel (4 star hotel) in twin bedded rooms. Entrance fees to the Archelogical sites, to the Catacombs, as well as Noto. Insurance for all events: Medicare, Lost luggage, Injuries, etc. included in the price.
Not included: Lunches, but prof. Sommariva will give the participants suggestions on where to eat.
