Recently, ESE Florence organized a highly exclusive field trip to Siena, granting students the extraordinary opportunity to experience the magic of the Palio di Siena, one of Italy’s most iconic and deeply rooted cultural events. As a visionary business school, we believe that true education must encompass the total immersion of the individual in the surrounding culture, absorbing the beauty and history that Italy has to offer.
The Palio is a centuries-old horse race held twice a year in Piazza del Campo, the spectacular medieval square at the heart of Siena. More than just a competition, it represents the identity, history, and profound pride of the city’s Contrade—the neighborhoods that compete and dedicate their entire existence throughout the year to this unique tradition.
Students attending our specialized courses and British degree programmes attended the general rehearsal on the day before the official race, immersing themselves in the palpable excitement that fills the city during Palio week.
The experience continued with a traditional dinner in a local Contrada, where students had the chance to share a genuine moment of Italian culture and community. Joining the passionate celebrations of the Giraffa Contrada, they discovered the unbreakable connection between the people of Siena and their centuries-old traditions.
For many students, this was their first encounter with the Palio, and they were captivated by the vibrant atmosphere: historical costumes, rhythmic music, mesmerizing flag performances, colorful parades, and the incredible, raw energy surrounding the horses and the race itself.
Walking through Siena during this special period felt like traveling back in time. The entire city was decorated for the occasion, creating a breathtaking medieval atmosphere. But what impressed the students the most was witnessing how deeply the people of Siena care about the Palio, pouring unparalleled passion, dedication, and emotion into preserving this living heritage.
At our private university, we teach that the most meaningful learning experiences happen through direct involvement and the pursuit of beauty. Across all our international campuses, cultural immersions like this allow students to discover the world from the inside out. It is through this philosophy of creative leisure and self-discovery that students create unforgettable memories and build stronger, lifelong connections with their peers.
Beyond the physical boundaries of the school, these shared experiences become vital opportunities for teamwork, friendship, and personal growth, forging the visionary leaders of tomorrow. A true journey into the very heart of Tuscan culture.
